Almost there...!

My predecessor said it would be tough, but she never quite made it clear that that wrestling with sharks would be an exercise in meditation compared to being Editor-in-Chief. I've jumped out airplanes for fun and I'm thinking that once this issue is wrapped up I might have to do it again for some stress relief.

Putting out a magazine is tough business for a class of university juniors and seniors working between classes to pull it all together. And we do it all: writing, photography, design, copy editing, research, and even ad sales.

And it is incredibly rewarding.

I mean, how many journalism students -- especially those who aspire to work in the magazine industry -- get to actually produce a magazine, much less a full-color, glossy-paged one? How many get the kind of support and feedback that we do by having a target demographic of media professionals, faculty and students? And talk about high expectations...

Like any endeavor, we've had our share of twists and turns, and unexpected setbacks. This is our third issue and we are only the second class to produce the magazine, but we have a great and talented team of editors and staff members that have been really pulled together to bring it all together -- in the classroom, during late nights in the classroom, 2 a.m. phone calls and writing sessions, weekends spent looking for advertisers. I'm very proud of the team and grateful for the invaluable advice and guidance of Dr. Carolyn Lepre, our faculty adviser.

And we are very appreciative of those who have supported us with your letters and suggestions, subscriptions, and donations. Without you, we wouldn't have a magazine.

This issue goes to the printer on Monday November 13 and we expect to ship it in early December. We're very proud of this issue and the improvements we've made over past issues. We've made some design changes and even added a new department in which we put the spotlight on a member of our alumni each issue. For this issue, we've turned our sights to the future and looked at important areas in which the profession is evolving and areas in which it is being challenged. We explore how the term "journalist" is being redefined, ethical challenges journalists are facing, crisis reporting, and international reporting -- and much more!
